Child's Blouse
Object numberM2012/011
TitleChild's Blouse
DescriptionBlouse, belonging to one of Mary Ziegler’s mother’s younger sisters. Hela Stein (the donors mother) had four younger sisters (Sarah, Hannah, Fagela and another whose name she can’t recall) all who perished in the Holocaust. Hela was in hiding during the war and was the only member of her family to survive. The family home was completely destroyed and the donor is not certain how she kept the blouse nor to which sister it belonged.
In Australia, the blouse hung in a cupboard in Hela’s home and occasionally she would take it out to show Mary and to talk about her sisters. It was the only item that connected her to family and life before the war.
The child’s blouse is light peppermint green with scalloping around the cuffs, collar and pockets and has textured vertical stripes. The garment appears to be handmade.
