DescriptionCeremonial silver trowel with inscription: ‘This trowel was presented to George J. Cohen. ESQ. on the occasion of his laying of the foundation stone of the NSW Jewish War Memorial building Sydney 28th February 1923.’
George Judah Cohen (1842-1937) was a prominent businessman in Australia in the early 20th century. He was the director of several corporations including the Australian Gas Light Co., Commercial Banking Co. of Sydney, the brewer Tooth and Co. and the Royal Exchange. He was also a prominent religious and community leader, actively involved on the board of The Great Synagogue and with organisations such as the Australian Jockey Club and several charities.
The Sydney Jewish Museum building, situated on the corner of Burton Street and Darlinghurst Road, bears two dedication plaques in honour of George Judah Cohen dated 28 February 1923, coinciding with the foundation of the NSW Jewish War Memorial building, housing the SJM. The trowel is now housed in the building it took part in founding.
