DescriptionNon-Jewish brothers Gerben and Hendrik Bonnema were born in Workum, the Netherlands. They were both active in the Dutch Resistance helping Allied pilots to escape by hiding them. They also assisted in the hiding of Jews. This medal is the Dutch Resistance Memorial Cross. There is also a small ribbon and a small bow. They are housed in a rectangular blue box.The medal was awarded to Gerben Bonnema for his heroic role in the Dutch Resistance durign WWII. The medal ribbon has blue, red, white and brown stripes. The Cross was instituted on the 35th anniversary of the Liberation (29th December 1980). It has the inscription De Tyranny Verdryven (to destroy tyranny). The Cross with the ribbon and bow was awarded to participants on the resistance against the occupying forces of the Dutch Territories in WWII.
