DescriptionOil on canvas triptych, framed as one art work, by Maia Valenzuela. Titled 'Arbeit Macht Frei: Work Makes Free', Maia painted the canvas as part of her Higher School Certificate Examinations (HSC) in Visual Arts while at Kincoppal, Rose Bay. The painting is unsigned, but a form attached to the reverse identifies the student number (4405528) and the school number (11009). The work features three Sydney Holocaust survivor's - Jacob Raykin, Olga Horak and Morris Shell, and numerous iconic symbols of the Holocaust such as a tattooed forearm, gas chambers and corpses. Maia was born in 1976. She was inspired by Steven Spielberg's film Schindler's List. Maia worked non-stop on the canvas for two weeks, seeking to capture the atmosphere of the camps by using dark colours and striking tones.
