DescriptionProgramme for the Fourth Military Chanucah Service held at the Great Synagogue, Sydney on Sunday 1 January 1911. The order of service contains the readings, lightening of the channukiah, the prayer for the King, the Chanukah Hymn and finishes with the National Anthem (God Save the King).
In 1907 Rabbi Francis Lyon Cohen who was the first Jewish Chaplain in the British military, introduced annual military Chanukah services at the Great Synagogue in Sydney after his appointment as Chief Minister. A celebration of the Maccabi legend of courage and victory, Channukah was seen as an appropriate festival to encourage Jewish enlistment and to commemorate fallen Jewish servicemen.
