DescriptionSmall pocket-sized Siddur (Nusach Sfarad/Chassidic prayer book), printed in Przemyśl, Poland, 1925. It was kept in a leather wallet (object M1993/005:003), and used by Herman Finger whilst in the Tsibolovke (Transnistria) and Bondurovka (Romania) ghettos/camps. It is missing hundreds of pages - should be 885 pages but only the first 66 exist.
Herman was born in Cernauti (Bukovina, Romania) in 1888. He married Frantiska (Fani, Fanny) Sperlingova on 28 September 1917. They had four sons, Adolf, Sol (later Salo), Benno and David.
Frantiska and Herman were separated from Benno when he and his wife Fella were taken to Bershad concentration camp. They later reunited, travelled to Bondurovka camp, where they were liberated in 1944, and were separated again until they returned to Cernauti.
Herman and Frantiska migrated to Australia in 1949, a year after Benno and his family. Herman and Benno bought a dry-cleaning/tailor shop together, but sadly his father died three weeks later from cancer. Frantiska died from illness a year after.
The prayer book is part of a collection of certificates, glasses, dentures and other memorabilia belonging to Herman Finger, donated by his son Benno in 1993.
