DescriptionSilver ceremonial trowel with a wooden handle Presented to Max Platus to lay down the foundation stone of Bankstown Synagogue. The trowel is inscribed: “Presented to Max Platus Esq. President Bankstown & Dist. War Memorial Synagogue to commemorate laying of the foundation stone 21.6.59.” Max Platus (1919-2004) was born in Berlin, the family migrated from Germany about 1929, after a brief stay in Israel, arriving in Australia in 1929. Max became a much respected community member.
