DescriptionThis watercolour painting, in blue gouche on paper, depicts three sorrowful women in despair. A dead baby is lying in the arms of presumably the mother. A kneeling women in front of her appears to hold a knife or other object. This could be read as an allegory of God testing the Jews as he did with the sacrifice of Abraham. The standing figure has a Star of David on her right breast. The Star of David with the word Jude (German for Jew) appears as an iconic symbol on the top left hand corner. The artist is not known. The art work may have been produced during the Holocaust.
