DescriptionYarmulka (kippah), belonging to Glen Soicher, made on the occasion of his Bar Mitzvah which took place on 7 January 2008 in Jerusalem. It is embroidered with three flags - South African, Israeli and Australian – each country having a special significance for the family. Inside the Yarmulka is the inscription ‘Barmitzvah Glen Soicher 7 January 2008 Parashat Bo Kotel, Jerusalem’.
Celebrating Glen's Bar Mitzvah in Israel fulfilled a promise Evan and Jenny Soicher made at the Western Wall in 1996 with their 14-month-old son Glen - to return to Israel to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah. Jenny's father, Paul de Jong, who passed away three weeks before Glen’s birth, served in the Israeli Navy and was a founding member of front-line Kibbutz Ma'ayan Baruch during the 1950s: "With my father's deep commitment to Israel, we believed he would have been proud to know that our entire family embarked on this spiritual journey." Symbolic kippot embossed with the flags were created for the occasion, and given to male guest to wear during the ceremony. Evan and Jenny Soicher, both born in South Africa, immigrated to Australia in 1998.
