DescriptionBlack and white photograph of a farmer and his young son ploughing the fields with a horse and plough; attributed to Roman Vishniac.
The people depicted in the image are Zelman Engelman and one of his sons, either Shlomo or Motya - father and brother of John and Mark Engelman. Of the five siblings (four brothers and one sister), only John and Mark survived. The family lived in a Czechoslovakian rural town called Lisecova. Mark remembers the day a photographer came and took pictures. When ‘A Vanishing World’ was published, he was nostalgic about the images which were close to ‘home’. “It was very special to my Dad as it is only one of two photos of his father, and the only one of a brother,” Ilana McCorquodale (nee Engelman).
