DescriptionBooklet produced as part of tribute event in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps and the end to World War II in Europe.
The event was held on 7 May 1995 at the Sydney Opera House and was hosted by the Sydney Jewish Museum. The event was attended by the founder of the Museum, John Saunders, AO; Bob Carr, then Premier of New South Wales; Peter Sinclair, AC, then Governor of New South Wales, and guests from overseas including General Alexander Haig from the United States of America; The Lord Howe of Aberavon from the United Kingdom and Dr. Aleksandr Bessmertnykh from Russia as well as survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants. The event was divided into two parts with music played, speeches made and stories told.
The booklet contains messages from John Saunders, AO, Peter Sinclair, AC, Bob Carr, Marcus Einfeld and Steven Spielberg. It has summaries of the personal recollections of Marika Weinberger, Donald Watt (later discredited) and Wilfred Cohen. The remainder of the booklet discusses the Sydney Jewish Museum and an exhibition associated with the anniversary of liberation as well as the installation of a time capsule, to be opened after a further fifty years (in 2045).
