Titleluggage sticker
DescriptionLuggage sticker from Lloyd Triestino Ocean Liners that was attached to the luggage of Kurt Gottlieb(1910-1995) a refugee escaping Nazi horrors of Europe in 1940. He departed from Genoa, Italy for Australia on a Lloyd Triestino liner (Italian shipping company) arriving in Australia on 12th April 1940. The luggage sticker shows the destination Australia in red text, with an ocean liner passing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The sticker reflects an era of tourism and immigration by ship. The design of the sticker is symbolic of the modernity of the 1930’s.
The Lloyd Triestino shipping company was founded in 1833. After 1937 its fleet grew to 85 owned vessels deployed in 17 services to Asia, Africa, and Australia. By the end of World War II, sixty eight ships had been lost. By the 1970’s the company changed focus from passenger to freight, due to increase in air travel.
