DescriptionFront page of the Argus Pictorial Supplement, Tuesday November 28 1939. the Argus was a Melbourne newspaper. The illustration is titled “End of Another U-boat.” It shows a pen and ink wash, illustration with the caption of “throwing a depth charge into the sea to destroy a U-boat that the British navy has hunted down” The caption also refers to the illustration drawn by a staff artist. Marcuse’s signature appears on the lower left corner. Page 2 of the supplement also shows illustrations by Marcuse titled “How the British Navy Hunts U-boat Minelayers.” A series of 10 illustrations explain step by step the process of hunting down enemy U-boat minelayers. Ernst Marcuse (1900-1985) was a commercial artist and illustrator who came to Australia in 1939. He produced many war illustrations for The Argus Newspaper and joined the Australian Army where he produced many visual aid material for training and illustrating for Army publications.
