DescriptionDuring World War I the “Szurmay Fund“ in Hungary assisted invalids, war widows and orphans by raising donations, details of which were published in the press.
Ten-year-old Katalin Lamberger wrote to the editor of “Az Est“, and he responded with an open letter:
“Dear Katalin Lamberger, you wrote that your heart aches as you have no money to assist the invalids, the widows and orphans of our fallen heroes. This is because your father, an invalid tradesman with no income, can’t give you any. Yet, in following your heart, you have offered to have your well-groomed, chestnut brown 70cm long hair cut off and sold at an open auction for the benefit of the Szurmay Fund. You regard this as your patriotic duty.
Dear Katalin, may your beautiful hair keep on gracing your head; we believe that you have set a touching example through your intention, and that the well–off and the rich will learn from your gesture….”
