Object numberM2016/018
DescriptionSuitcase used by Sandor Danos, wife Hedwig (Hedy) and daughters Suzanne and Agnes (Tinny) when the family immigrated to Australia in 1951 as Jewish refugees from Hungary. Their permit to enter Australia was issued only after a burdensome process involving identification documents and medical reports.
During the war, Sandor was in the Hungarian forced labour units in Russia and Germany, from which he escaped several times. After Auschwitz was liberated, he escaped for a final time and he and his wife Hedy went into hiding. They were hidden in a cupboard for the last three months of the war by the concierge of their apartment. They remained in hiding until Budapest was liberated.
Susie was born in 1946 and Tinny in 1948 in Budapest. After the Russians came into Hungary the family planned their escape from the communists. They went to the Czech border and bribed people smugglers to take them across. They were transferred to Vienna and from there went to a displaced persons camp near Linz, spending two years, 1949 – 1950, at Steyr DP camp. They were finally sponsored by friends to come to Australia.
On side: Agenti Generali Fratelli Cosulich sticker with 'D' (for deck).
