Object numberM2009/020
TitleAndrew Szekely's pipe
DescriptionPipe, given to Andrew Szekely as a gift. Andrew was born 3 July 1921 in Mateszalka, Hungary. The pipe has been with him throughout his time in the Hungarian forced labour battalions; when German soldiers forced him from his family home in Budapest in 1944 and when he entered the notorious Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria in 1945. “It stayed with me all the time. Many things were discarded, like blankets and utensils. This little pipe stayed with me all the time.” "I put it in my study to remind me always of the time." He said, "This little piece of lifeless wood has part of my spirit in it". In his Shoah Foundation testimony he said: "Occasionally I used to smoke pipe. But it was more for fun than for smoking."
