DescriptionEPNS plate or platter with the inscription, "Presented to S.J. Guss Esq. By the Council of the N.S.W. Jewish War Memorial in appreciation of his successful and unselfish work during a period of eight years as President, 1946". Simon Joseph (Joe) Guss was born in London, migrated to Australia on 30-10-1916, at the age of 23, enlisted in Sydney to serve in WWI. He served in the A.S.C. (Australian Service Corps) in Egypt and was discharged on 08-08-1919. He returned to Sydney, was a member of the Great Synagogue and, as commemorated by the plate, served as President of the NSW Jewish War Memorial for 8 years (c.1938-1946).
