Object numberM2008/059:001
DescriptionBlue Box used by the Jewish National Fund (JNF) to raise money for the purchase of land for the Jewish people, Jerusalem, early 1900s. The box is made of tin and is painted blue and white with locations on the map of Israel marked in Hebrew.
The box pre-dates settlement in the Negev (1936), thus this region is not shown on the map. The tzedakah (charity) box most likely belonged to Walter Schneeweiss, who was actively involved in the Zionist movement in Vienna before German occupation. After immigrating to Australia he continued to raise funds for the Jewish National Fund.
