DescriptionSwedish Red Cross protection pass (Schutzbrief) for Mr and Mrs Lorant Kiss and daughter Vera. In actuality, Lorant Kiss was a cousin of Ilona Erdos Gardos. Laszlo Gardos, husband and father of Vera, was killed in Koszeg labour camp c. 1944. Ilona paid thousands of dollars for this protection pass; Lorant Kiss volunteered to "stand in" as the father figure in order for the family to secure the papers. It allowed Ilona and Vera to move into a crowded Swedish Red Cross house with other Jews. Ilona was later taken away with a group of people and murdered, their bodies thrown into the Danube. After the war, Vera's surrogate "father", Lorant, took care of her and her grandmother. Vera escaped from Hungary, arriving in Australia in 1956.
