The image was taken on 14 March 1941 and shows two German soldiers overseeing several Polish men digging a mass grave in the woods. They are surrounded by the bodies of many executed Polish men whose hands are tied behind their backs. The caption indicates that there were many Jews among those killed on this occassion and that those men digging the grave would soon be executed as well. It also indicates that this mass execution of 100 Polish men was in retaliation for the death of one German soldier. This Keystone image depicts the tragic civilian impact of Germany's invasion and occupation of Poland.
