DescriptionPopulation Census of Jews orange declaration receipt (in French) for Alfred Hofbauer, indicating that he was accounted for as a Jew in Colomb-Bechar, Algeria, dated 2 October 1941. This document shows that identification and census of Jews had reached North Africa. Alfred Hofbauer, only recently a member of the French Foreign Legion, was, nevertheless, subject to the census. Alfred Hofbauer was born in 1913 in Vienna and found refuge in France c. 1938. He escaped to Switzerland c. 1939, joined the French Foreign Legion 1939/1940, then the Pioneer Corps, British Army in 1943. He fought in North Africa and Italy in World War II and came to Australia in 1946.
