DescriptionColour drawing of Kerzaz, Algeria (Sahara), 1940, showing a view of the desert and palm trees. Kerzaz is located in the Bechar region of Algeria, North Africa. The drawing was found among papers of the late Alfred Hofbauer, who served in the French Foreign Legion in North Africa in 1940. The artist's signature is illegible (looks like Manning?) but was possibly Hofbauer's friend and co-leggionaire. Alfred Hofbauer was born in 1913 in Vienna and found refuge in France c. 1938. He escaped to Switzerland c. 1939, joined the French Foreign Legion 1939/1940, then the Pioneer Corps, British Army in 1943. He fought in North Africa and Italy in World War II and came to Australia in 1946.
