DescriptionUndated circular c. 1977 issued from Vienna, Austria, (in German) announces offer of financial help for victims of political persecution (all victims, not just Jewish). The amount offered varies from Austrian schillings 3000-15000, according to degree of need. Item donated with other documents from Alfred Hofbauer, who had applied for financial compensation for political persecution during World War II. Alfred was born in 1913 in Vienna and escaped from Austria to Switzerland c. 1939, joined the French Foreign Legion 1939/1940, then the Pioneer Corps, British Army in 1943. He fought in North Africa and Italy in World War II and came to Australia in 1946.

1. Minimum 3000-Maximum 15000 Austrian schillings, depending on degree of necessity, for those detained for at least 6 months – and denied from making a living.
2. Payment graded according to necessity of applicant and of application period 1978 or possibly after 1979
3. To avoid delays, part payments can be made according to the age of the applicant. Balance may be paid afterwards. Not all applicants will receive maximum payment. 37,982 applications have been received up to 1977; 19,400 have been paid for those born before 1909.
4. Applications will be dealt according to age of applicant and date of application.
