DescriptionLarge Passover plate made of hammered [hand beaten] 835 silver, probably German c. 1920's. Richly decorated with designs depicting scenes from the Haggadah and traditional fruit. Inside features elements of the Passover service in Hebrew. "1345" scratched on the back rim of the dish.
Seder means ‘order’ in Hebrew, and unfolds according to a script called the Haggadah. Steps of the ritual, dating back thousands of years, is engraved on the Seder plate in Hebrew:
Kadesh (blessing over the wine)
Urechatz (hands washed before handling the karpas)
Karpas (vegetable is dipped in salt water then eaten)
Yachatz (the middle of three matzos is broken)
Maggid (the second cup of wine is poured, the story of the flight of the Jewish slaves from Egypt is told)
Rachtzah (hands washed before the meal)
Motzi (prayer said before breaking bread)
Matzo (the matzo is blessd)
Maror (bitter herb is tasted)
Korech (sandwich of matzo, bitter herbs and charoset is eaten)
Shulchan Orech (meal begins)
Tzafun (child discovers the afikomen, which is then eaten)
Barech (third cup of wine poured, grace after meals is recited)
Hallel (fourth cup of wine poured, followed by psalms of praise and a prayer)
