Edna was one of eight women selected from the newly formed Women’s Royal Australian Navy (WRANS) to join the Royal Australian Navy in 1943. Her science degree from the University of Sydney earned her a posting in the secretive Radar Division where she rose to Second Officer. After the war, Edna was appointed by the University Commission to investigate rehabilitation programs aimed at preparing ex-servicemen and women for civilian life.
