The National Jewish Welfare Board (JWB) was formed on 9 April 1917, three days after the United States declared war on Germany. The purpose of the Board was to support United States (US) Jewish soldiers during World War I and continued its work in the Second World War. The organisation was charged with recruiting and training rabbis for military service as well as providing support materials to newly commissioned chaplains and Jewish service men and women.
Around 550,000 Jewish men and women served in the armed forces of the US during World War II. Before being deployed, most Jewish service members were given an abridged JWB pocket sized prayer books to take with them as they served overseas. The JWB also shipped packages with Matzah and Passover Haggadahs to troops overseas for informal Seder services.
This object is part of a larger collection of seven prayer books published by the Jewish Welfare Board of the USA for United States Jewish servicemen and women in World War II.
