TitlePhotograph of Flight Sergeant Maurice Isaac Green in uniform
DescriptionBlack and white photograph of Flight Sergeant Maurice Isaac Green of the Royal Australian Air Force (R.A.A.F), standing in uniform, in a garden, place unknown, circa 1942-1944. Maurice, son of Israel and Bella Green was killed during training air exercises on 26 January 1944, he was only 20 years old.
Maurice Isaac Green born in 19 November 1923 in Prahran, Victoria but grew up in Bellevue Hill. He served eight months in the Volunteer Defence Corps before he enlisted in Sydney at age 18, on 18 July 1942 for the RAAF. Maurice worked up the ranks from Aircrew, to Navigator, then to Flight Sargent. He was attached to the 6 Operational Training Unit RAAF in Nowra, New South Wales (NSW). This unit was the last stage of training for aircrew before being assigned to an operational unit of World War II.
On 26 January 1944, Maurice was on a training operation with three fellow crew members at Point Perpendicular, Jervis Bay, NSW. This crew was taking part in night torpedo exercises with HMAS Buna Bray, using flares when the Beaufort A-469 plan they were flying, flew into the sea. It is believed the pilot was dazzled by the flares, was unable to read his instruments and struck the water during the torpedo run. All crew members including Maurice, who was acting as observer to the pilot during the training exercises were killed.
Maurice has a headstone commemorating his service at the Nowra War Cemetery.
