Creator Peter Melocco
DescriptionMosaic on a terrazzo slab, depicting a menorah (ceremonial Jewish candelabra) and Star of David, framed by panels decorated with bunches of grapes. The mosaic was installed on the bathroom floor of the donor's home in Oatley. Research has revealed that it was originally part of the decorative front panel on the bimah of Central Synagogue in Grosvenor Street, Bondi Junction. Central Synagogue was demolished to make way for the construction of the Syd Einfeld Drive. It is assumed that the Synagogue’s demolisher found a willing and imaginative buyer, who installed it in what had originally been a weekender or oysterman’s humble abode.
The mosaic is thought to be the creation of the Melocco Brothers, a famous trio of Italian migrant master craftsmen whose mosaics adorn the foyer of the State Library, the crypt of St Marys Cathedral and the entrance of the Dymocks Building.
The original Central Synagogue had been built by Gordon Keesing in 1923, also the architect of the NSW Jewish War Memorial, which now houses the Sydney Jewish Museum.
