DescriptionLanding permit (copy negative) issued by the Commonwealth of Australia Department of Immigration to Hirsz Henryk Roth, aged 32 of Polish nationality, formerly of Shanghai. It certifies that permission has been granted for his admission to Australia and that his maintenance on arrival in Australia has been guaranteed by his brother-in-law Henryk Gostynski (Gostin) of Bellevue Hill, Sydney.
Polish born Hirsz Rot, known to his friends as ‘Hirshella Rot’, but to the wider world as Henry Roth, and wife Anneliese, were amongst 2,140 refugees who received life-saving transit visas from Sugihara in Lithuania in August 1940 and then made their way across Russia by train to Vladivostok and on to Kobe in Japan by ferry. They lived in Kobe until they were shipped, once Japan attacked Pearl Harbour, to the international safe haven of Shanghai, where they lived for the duration of the war.
Hirsz and Anneliese immigrated to Australia in 1947. They turned to the business world – to the ‘schmattes’ industry, where, although they had no training for it, were receptive to the opportunities the industry offered. The business main trading name was Wimbledon Fashions.
