DescriptionB & W photograph of Victor, Oradea, Romania, undated.
Part of a collection of photographs and children’s toys belonging to eight-year-old Victor Schwartz, who lived in Oradeo, Romania. One day, he arrived home from school and was told to he was to be "taken on a journey". Victor asked his neighbour to look after his prized possessions – a sticker book, Schuco tin car and his school satchel. He said he would come back to get them, but sadly he never returned. He was murdered in Auschwitz, together with other members of his family, on 31 May 1944.
The neighbours bundled his possessions together and kept them safe until the war was over. Victor's mother Ilona returned to Oradea after liberation and the neighbours returned her son’s possessions to her. She immigrated to Australia in the early 1960s, bringing these mementos with her. They were donated to the Sydney Jewish Museum in 1999.
