DescriptionGuitar found in the remains of the Lodz ghetto just after the war, date and origin unknown.
It was donated by Mrs E. Glowicz whose husband "came in on the first transport from Germany after the war to his hometown of Lodz. They were dismantling the Jewish ghetto and local residents were there too". Mr Glowicz noticed the guitar and took it. Mr and Mrs Glowicz immigrated to Australia in 1965 and brought the guitar with them. The donor does not speak English, but through Alex Horowitz, who brought it in, she said that the guitar "should be in Jewish hands."
The guitar has sustained damage/wear and tear on the veneer from use. Someone has inscribed a Star of David and the word 'Lodz' in pen (just below the neck). Who drew it, we don’t know, however, from the little we do know about its provenance, one can speculate that it is highly likely that the guitar sustained the spirit of people incarcerated in the ghetto. Its survival is remarkable as the Nazis seized most musical instruments in 1942.
