DescriptionInformation (typed) provided by Hana Novotny, on the leather Guild Sign and Leather workshop in Theresienstadt. She writes:
A tanners' and leather makers'/manufacturers' Guild Sign which represents a cow-hide, made for my father Jaroslav Lipa, by a friend and myself in a workshop in Theresienstadt some time in 1942/1943. I worked in the large workshop for a while and the manufacturing consisted of small money purses, wallets, billfolders etc, usually made from artificial, non-leather materials (as per the cow hide sign), or occasionally from leather, from the German 'High-Ups'. Also redoing or remodelling leather goods brought in by the German 'high-ups' or German guards. Sometimes articles "obtained" by the Germans from the "inspected" luggage of the Ghetto inmates were redone or remodelled as requested. The workshop was housed in a large one storied wooden building, "barrack" like, and was near the main square of the ghetto. Other workshops with various manufacturing were also in operation elsewhere in the ghetto.
Hana Novotny (nee Lipa) and her father Jaroslav Lipa were deported to Terezin on 10 August 1942. She worked in one of the camp-ghettos workshops housed in a large one-storied wooden building located near the main square of the ghetto.
Part of a collection of photographs, medical records, identity documents, postcards, letters, 1943 pocket book, hand-made leather book mark, deportation slips and yellow cloth Star of David donated by Hana Novotny (nee Lipa).
