Description“Carte de Munca”, a Romanian working certificate or book in which employment history is recorded. It was issued to Herman Finger on 3 February 1947 by the Asociatia Fostilor Deportati in Transnistria to replace a previous one he owned, which was confiscated when he was deported to the camps.
Herman was born in Cernauti in 1888. He married Frantiska (Fani, Fanny) Sperlingova in a Jewish ceremony in the early 1910’s, and had a civil marriage ceremony on 28 September 1917 (refer to object M1993/005:002).
Herman, Fani and their four sons (Adolf, Sol, Benno and David) were first taken to Cernauti ghetto in 1941. Herman and Fani were kept in camps and ghettos in Tsibolovke and Bondurovka (Ukraine) for three years, until they were liberated from Bondurovka in 1944 by Soviet armed forces. Herman worked as a tailor for the Ukrainians whilst in the camps.
Herman and Frantiska migrated to Australia in 1949, a year after Benno, Fella and their newborn daughter Lily. Herman and Benno bought a dry-cleaning/tailor shop together but his father died three weeks later from cancer. Frantiska died from illness a year after.
This Carte de Munca is part of a collection of certificates, statements and other memorabilia belonging to Herman Finger, donated by his son Benno in 1996.
