DescriptionCertificate formalising an alteration of registration of a birth name issued to Alfred Meyer by the Gemeindeverwaltung der Hansestadt Hamburg (Local Administration for the 'Trade Union city' of Hamburg) on 21 April 1939. It states that Alfred Meyer, born 22 May 1909 in Hamburg, has a Jewish father and mother and that he must adopt the additional first name 'Israel'. Males were required to adopt the additional name Israel while females adopted the additional name of Sara.
Alfred was released from Buchenwald concentration camp, Germany, in January 1939. He obtained a visa to immigrate to the UK and then the USA.
