TitleTorah Cover
DescriptionCover for Sefer Torah donated by Adam Szus (Schuss). It came from the Synagogue in Brzostek in the Carpathian Mountains, a small village in the south of Poland where Adam, also known as Avraham Leib Szus, was born. The town had a population of between 450-500 Jews, approximately one-third of the population, estimated at around 40 Jewish families in 1939.
The Sefer Torah was rescued by a non-Jewish resident of the town. When Adam returned to his village after the war in 1946, it was given to him by the man whose name he can no longer recall. He brought it to Australia when he immigrated in late 1959 and wished to find a new home for it among the Jews. He first donated it to the Yeshiva in Bondi and when it closed down, he donated it to the Sydney Jewish Museum.
There is now no Jewish population left in Brzostek and the Synagogue has been turned into a public school. The donor wishes this object "to serve as a reminder of his people’s past in Poland."
The scroll is parchment. The cover is maroon velvet with a crude yellow Star of David fashioned out of gold binding. It was presented to the Museum fastened with a leather belt. At the time of receipt, it had been scrolled to the weekly portion 'Parashah Vayakel'.
