Title'Kamiantets Podolski' by Wendy Sharpe
Creator Wendy Sharpe
DescriptionWendy Sharpe's 'Kamiantets Podolski' archival folding book.
This folding book was completed by Sharpe during a 2019 trip with her cousin, Ruth Fishman, to discover her father's Jewish family heritage in Kamianets-Posilsky, Ukraine. During this trip, she sketched and composed ideas. The resulting image of Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle is part of a series of works undertaken which led to an exhibition at the Sydney Jewish Museum. This included large-scale drawings and paintings as murals. However due to the COVID pandemic, the mural was never shown to the public.
Kamianets-Posilsky has a dark history, apart from the early 20th pogroms. It is the site of the August 1941 massacre where the Nazis murdered almost 30,000 Jews (12,000 local Jews and 18,000 Jews from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania).
