Object numberM1996/005:003
TitleCertificate of Domicile
DescriptionCertificate of Domicile (residence) issued to Benno Finger in 1929, indicating that he lived in Satu Mare, Romania.
Benno Isaac Finger was born on the 10 August 1919 in Cernauti (Chernivtsi), Romania (now modern day Ukraine). His father Herman was a poor tailor, and his mother Frantiska, later Fani/Fanny Finger (nee Sperlingova) cared for the children at home. He had three brothers: Adolf, born in 1913, Sol, born in 1915, and David, born in 1923, and described his home life as happy.
Benno and his wife Fella married in 1940.
In 1941 Benno, Fella and his whole family were taken to Cernauti ghetto by Nazi soldiers. Benno and Fella were then taken to Bershad camp (Transnistria), and later moved to Tsibolovke camp (Ukraine) to reunite with Benno’s parents. They then all moved to Bondurovka camp (Ukraine) to reunite with Sol, and it was then that Benno was forced to work in the German Organisation Todt for eight months making roads and bridges. He later returned to Bondurovka and was liberated by the Soviet armed forces there in 1944.
After his return to Cernauti, Benno was captured and taken to Siberia, and forced to be a USSR soldier until he was wounded. He later became a Sergeant and was allowed to return home.
Benno, Fella and their newborn daughter Lily were able to register to immigrate to Australia (refer to object M1996/005:005), and arrived in 1948. Later their second son Harold was born. Herman and Fani emigrated in 1949. Benno and his father bought a shop together, but his father died soon after from cancer.
This certificate is part of a collection of statements, articles and other memorabilia belonging to Benno Finger, donated in 1996.
