DescriptionReplacement passport for Herman Finger issued by the American Joint Distribution Committee in 1947 or 1948. The original was confiscated when he was taken to a ghetto in Romania. Herman and his wife Fanny (Fani) used this passport when they immigrated to Australia in 1949.
Herman was born in Cernauti in 1888. He married Frantiska (Fani, Fanny) Sperlingova in a Jewish ceremony in the early 1910’s, and had a civil marriage ceremony on 28 September 1917 (refer to object M1993/005:002).
Herman, Fani and their four sons (Adolf, Sol, Benno and David) were first taken to Cernauti ghetto in 1941. Herman and Fani were kept in camps and ghettos in Tsibolovke and Bondurovka (Ukraine) for three years, until they were liberated from Bondurovka in 1944 by Soviet armed forces. Herman worked as a tailor for the Ukrainians whilst in the camps.
Once they immigrated to Australia, Herman and Benno bought a dry-cleaning/tailor shop together but his father died three weeks later from cancer. Frantiska died from illness a year after.
This passport is part of a collection of certificates, statements and other memorabilia belonging to Herman Finger, donated by his son Benno in 1996.
