A stamp indicates that Wlhelm travelled via Marseille, France on 13 September 1938. It also contains a visa No 9947 for Palestine dated 9 September 1938 which was granted at Brussels and valid until 30 September 1938. It subsequently contains a permit to permanently remain in Palestine as an immigrant dated 19 September 1938.
Notably, this passport does not contain a red "J", nor the name "Israel". Passports held by Jewish men were declared invalid without these marks after 8 October 1938.
Wilhelm Hirsch was born on 2 October 1882 in Neumagen, Germany to parents Alexander and Rosa Hirsch. He married Sophie Steinfels on 13 May 1914. Their daughter, Rosa Steil (nee. Hirsch), was born on 21 March 1915 and their son, Max, was born on 7 February 1921.
The family escaped from Germany to Tel Aviv, Palestine in 1938 where Max, served with the British Army during World War II.
Wilhelm and Sophie fled Tel Aviv following the outbreak of war in Palestine, arriving in Sydney on aircraft VH-EAE on 21 November 1950.
Wilhelm passed away on 1 April 1968.
