DescriptionBritish War medal 1914-1918 awarded to Mervyn Abraham Fader, who served as a gunner in the AIF Field Artillery Brigade from 1916-1918. The medal depicting King George V was instituted by the king in 1919 to mark the end of World War I and record the service given. It was awarded to those who entered theatres of war between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918.
Mervyn Abraham Fader was born in 1890 to Solomon and Jeannette Fader (nee Lowenthal). They lived in Liverpool Street, Paddington. From 1913, Mervyn and Solomon had a business together in Paddington, “The Renovatory” cleaners and pressers, where Mervyn worked as a tailor and later a clerk. Mervyn enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in December 1916. He was assigned to the Field Artillery Brigade, April 1917 Reinforcements and embarked from Melbourne in June 2017 on board the HMAT Suevic, arriving in Liverpool, England. He served in the field in France at the beginning of 1918 with the 5th Machine Gun Battalion of the 1st Divisional Artillery Column. He was injured and returned to Australia in June 1918, arriving in Sydney at the beginning of August. He was discharged on 2 October 1918 for medical reasons.
