DescriptionPhotograph of Frank Heller (standing) at a coronation ball in Bondi, 2 June 1953.
Frank Heller was born on 30 December 1904 in Most, Czechoslovakia. After his schooling he moved to the spa town of Karlsbad to work as a representative of a well-known insurance company. Always interested in sports, he was the founder of the Maccabi Youth movement in Karlsbad. There he met Anna (Annie) Hirsch in 1936 and they were married on 26 December of that year. Frank and Annie left for Prague in 1938, when the Nazi influence was very strong and it was very dangerous as a Jew to remain in Karlsbad. He became involved in a Zionist organisation that assisted in the escape of youth and people in danger of being arrested in Prague. When the situation in Prague deteriorated further in 1939, Frank and Annie left for England. They came to Australia in 1949 and lived in Parramatta. He established Helco Swim & Sportswear which became very successful and traded nationally. Frank passed away 30 August 1978.
This photograph is part of a collection of photographs relating to Frank and Anna Heller and their lives in Czechoslovakia before the war.
