DescriptionSign made for Oscar Shub and Ilan Buchman for their wedding day, 2 May 2018. Hashtag sign with "#shubmanwedding" in black text.
The couple met at a dinner party in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1971 and have been together since. They initially settled in South Africa, immigrating to Australia in 1986. Australia passed the marriage equality law on 9 December 2017, shortly after, Oscar and Ilan set a date to be married. Their ceremony was the first Jewish religious same-sex marriage in Australia and was presided over by Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins at Emmanuel Synagogue on 2 May 2018.
As well as the hashtag sign, the couple also donated photos from their wedding and another taken in Johannesburg in 1972, The Museum also received a yarmulke embossed with their names and date of the wedding as well as acceptance rings inscribed with ‘until we all belong’; during the nuptials Oscar and Ilan exchanged these for traditional, full circle wedding rings.
