TitleOBWIESZCZENIE
DescriptionStreet poster from Krakow, Poland, dated 12 January 1944 listing the names of 36 Polish civilians executed by the SS for their alleged work with the Polish Resistance. The donor’s uncles are Numbers 32, Wladyslav Sroka and 33 Franciszek Sroka on the poster. They were executed by firing squad after being subject to terrible torture in retalliation for sabotaging a train. Apparently, they did not reveal any names of other resistance fighters even though they were tortured. The poster was taken down by members of her father’s family.
The donor’s father, Janek (John) Sroka, left Poland in 1939, making his way to France. He served with the Polish Army abroad. After the war, he arrived in Tasmania via England in 1947.
