DescriptionRed Cross award given to Dr József Blum for his charitable work with the poor. Cross shaped medal with smaller red cross in centre, surrounded by latin inscription "Patriae ac Humanitati". Medal attached to red and white triangular ribbon. Red box bears latin inscription on front "Patriae ac Humanitati 1864-1914 K.D.".
Dr. Josef Blum was from Nagy Karoy, part of Romania which was later under Hungarian control. Dr Blum was awarded the Red Cross awards becuase he was president of a hospital that treated people who couldn't afford it. During the holocaust he was sent to Auschwitz, he did not survive. Dr Blum's wife was not Jewish, but saved many Jews during the war. She had wanted to go with her husband to Auschwitz, but was not allowed. She was named "Righteous Gentile".
