ОписаниеSilver charm, in the shape of an accordion, designed by Josef Moravec, a songwriter and accordion player, given to 17 year old Edith Sternbergova in the Theresienstadt ghetto, 1943. It is made from melted down German currency (Reichesmark).
The charm is engraved on both sides: One side is engraved to emulate an accordion and the other side has two bars of music written in the treble clef (musically it isn’t accurate, so has been engraved by a novice); it includes the words ‘Znam Jednu Silnici’, which has been interpreted as a song about a road to Prague.
Josef did not survive the Holocaust. The donor, Edith Layer (nee Edita Sternbergova), was born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, in 1926. She and her sister, Charlotte, were sent to Theresienstadt ghetto in 1942. Because their mother was not Jewish, their father, Emanuel Sternberg (born 1894 in Ostrava) stayed home. In February 1943, their mother passed away and a few days later their father arrived at Theresienstadt. Around September 1944 Edith's father and sister were deported to the East. Her sister Charlotte came home, their father did not.
