Considers the tortuous and often unruly negotiations between the Nazis and prominent Jews to effect the rescue of the latters' co-religionists from the gas chambers. This bargaining at times involved money, at others goods (eg trucks). When, in the closing stages of the war, Himmler ordered the cessation of mass murder, his motives were entirely pragmatic. The Allies, meanwhile, considered the Jewish problem a side issue to their central concern: winning the war.
