The Elijah’s cup, named after one of the great prophets, is a Kiddush cup used for celebrating Pesach (Passover). In Elijah’s honour, a special cup filled with wine is a feature of the Seder table, symbolizing that one day Prophet Elijah will return to announce the coming of the Messiah, and with him, redemption. Traditionally, after the meal, the door is opened for the Prophet.
Livia Revay received the Elijah’s cup from a friend in Prague in the 1930s, when she was enrolled at a German University where she received her doctorate. Although she grew up in Budapest, she wasn’t allowed to go to university there because of the numerus clausus restrictions. She returned to Hungary, surviving the War by hiding on false papers.
