ОписаниеThis image depicts Edith Elter, the sister-in-law of Denis Frederick Carver (born Fritz Schnitzer) and daughter of Hermann Elter in front of the hull of HMA LIEN.
The HWA LIEN is historically significant as being one of the passenger ships transporting Jewish refugees to Australia in 1947 for resettlement and humanitarian aid. Subsidised fares for Shanghai Jews were undertaken by the Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. The HWA LIEN was a media phenomenon, with the ship being linked to the Australian media controversy surrounding the arrival of Jewish refugees to Darwin, Brisbane and Sydney.
Being a bona fide refugee leaving the ghetto in Shanghai to Australia would have been a chance to re-establish their lives and to achieve levels of normality.
The date of the photograph is assumed to coincide with the landing permit (1947) for Carver (under Fritz Schnitzer) to Australia. It is not known whether this image was taken before or after the voyage to Australia.
