НазваниеL'Illustre Du Petit Journal (8th Oct 1933)
ОписаниеThis is the October 8th edition of the L’Illustre Du Petit Journal. The front page illustration depicts Dutch communist , Marinus van der Lubbe on trial in Leipzig, accused of setting fire to the Reichstag (German parliamentary building) on the 27th of February 1933.
After confessing to the arson, Van de Lubbe was tried, convicted and later executed for his crime. The Reichstag fire was a pivotal event in Hitler’s rise to power. Nazi officials seized the opportunity to incite panic amongst the people, touting the incident as evidence of a Communist plot to overthrow the state.
Implementing emergency Constitutional powers, President Von Hindenburg folded to Nazi willl and approved a Decree for the Protection of the People and the State, affecting immediate and severe restrictions on civil liberties. These repressive measures were not only aimed at Communists, their sympathisers and others deemed threatening to the regime. In the suspension of free speech, free press and the other constitutional protections, Nazism began to take hold in Germany.
