ОписаниеLetter to Miss Deborah Blumenthal from Rabbi Francis Cohen at the Great Synagogue Sydney, regarding the tradition of wearing a wedding veil. Deborah Blumenthal was married to William Stone on 20 February 1917 by Rabbi Cohen. They had three children; Zara Stone born 1917, Miriam Stone born 1919 and Ruth Stone born 1921.
Deborah, born 1885, was the daughter of Dina Blumenthal (nee Selig) and Nathan Blumenthal. Dinah arrived in Australia in 1865, a dressmaker at age 15, with her mother Rieke and five brothers and sisters. The Selig family immigrated from Frederickstadt, Denmark in December 1864 when the town, along with the rest of the state of Schleizwig Holstein, was acquired into the German empire. Rieke’s husband Joseph had died in 1863, so she left her home a widow with six children; Jacob, Aaron, Sarah, Dinah, Phineas, and Guldah. They arrived in Australia 3 March 1865 on board the Himalaya.
This letter is part of a collection of documents and photographs relating to the Selig family, who are among the oldest families in Australian Jewish history.
